Minha obra "Lágrimas do Rio Mar, o Rio Amazonas" constrói uma narrativa onde a simplicidade geométrica se mescla com uma profundidade simbólica. Inspirada pela visão de Milton Santos sobre paisagem como um conjunto de formas que expressam as heranças das sucessivas relações entre o homem e a natureza.
Para os habitantes do norte, o Rio Amazonas supera a mera definição de um rio; ele se torna um "mar" em virtude de sua magnitude, extensão e volume d'água. Essa denominação não apenas reflete uma realidade geográfica, mas também expressa uma relação profunda e íntima com esse curso d'água colossal. Ao chamá-lo de "mar," os nativos atribuem a ele uma grandiosidade que vai além das palavras, influenciando diretamente a percepção da paisagem e da própria identidade cultural.

Ao incorporar essa perspectiva na minha obra, brinco com essas referências culturais para moldar a paisagem segundo minha percepção de herança e formas. A escolha de utilizar lágrimas em formato geométrico e a quantidade específica de 1100, representando os afluentes do Rio Amazonas, não é apenas uma representação visual; é uma expressão simbólica da herança cultural que moldou minha visão.

A brincadeira com a nomenclatura e a grandiosidade do "mar" do norte brasileiro é uma exploração poética, desafiando a percepção convencional de paisagem e classificação formal da geografia brasileira. Ao criar uma narrativa visual que utiliza elementos culturais e geográficos como matéria-prima, minha obra torna-se uma interpretação pessoal e única da herança que carrego como alguém que nasceu norte do Brasil e migrou para morar o nordeste, uma metamorfose contínua que transcende as fronteiras geográficas.

A escolha do formato, cores e disposição das lágrimas geométricas não é apenas uma homenagem estética, mas uma celebração simbólica das icônicas bandeiras de São João. Essas bandeiras, além de evocarem tradições festivas, transformam-se em elementos geométricos simples que expressam, de maneira minimalista, a riqueza cultural e ambiental da paisagem brasileira.

Ao fazer referência ao São João, estabeleço uma conexão pessoal e cultural entre as duas regiões que habitei. Nascida em Porto Velho, Rondônia, natural do norte brasileiro e afluente do Rio Madeira, e hoje residindo na em João Pessoa, na Paraíba, a obra é uma síntese visual e conceitual dessas vivências. A escolha da referência ao São João não é apenas uma homenagem à tradição nordestina, mas também uma ponte entre as diferentes regiões do Brasil que moldaram minha percepção.

Essa obra, parte do projeto "Panapaná" — significando "borboletas" em tupi guarani — passa por uma metamorfose contínua, ocupando três espaços e ações expositivas interligadas. Também visa criar essa metamorfose cultural que enfrentei na transição entre regiões, fatores sociais e paisagens.

Assim, a obra não apenas presta homenagem às tradições culturais e à visão nativa da paisagem, mas também convida o espectador a participar de uma experiência poética, estabelecendo novas percepções sobre a natureza e a cultura. Essa interação entre a herança cultural, formas geométricas e a rica nomenclatura regional resulta em uma obra que não apenas representa, mas também interpreta e dialoga com a paisagem, enriquecendo-a com camadas de significado que ultrapassam a mera estética visual.

My artwork, "Tears of the Sea River, the Amazon River," weaves a narrative where geometric simplicity intertwines with a symbolic depth. Inspired by Milton Santos's perspective on landscape as a collection of forms expressing the legacies of successive relationships between humans and nature.

The Amazon River is more than just a river to the people of the north. It is a "sea" because of its size, length, and volume. This designation not only reflects a geographical reality but also expresses a deep and intimate connection with this colossal watercourse. By calling it the "sea," the natives attribute to it a grandiosity that goes beyond words, directly influencing the perception of the landscape and their cultural identity.

In incorporating this perspective into my artwork, I play with these cultural references to shape the landscape according to my perception of heritage and forms. The choice to use tear-shaped geometric forms, totaling 1100 and representing the tributaries of the Amazon River, is not just a visual representation; it is a symbolic expression of the cultural heritage that shaped my vision.

The playful exploration of the nomenclature and grandiosity of the "sea" in northern Brazil is a poetic journey, challenging conventional perceptions of the landscape and formal classification of Brazilian geography. By creating a visual narrative that uses cultural and geographic elements as raw material, my work becomes a personal and unique interpretation of the heritage I carry as someone who was born in the north of Brazil and migrated to live in the northeast, a continuous metamorphosis that transcends the geographic borders.

The selection of the format, colors, and arrangement of the geometric tears is not merely an aesthetic homage but a symbolic celebration of the iconic São João flags. These flags, beyond evoking festive traditions, transform into simple geometric elements expressing, in a minimalist manner, the cultural and environmental richness of the Brazilian landscape.

By referencing São João, I establish a personal and cultural connection between the two regions I have inhabited. Born in Porto Velho, Rondônia, a native of the northern Brazilian region and a tributary of the Madeira River, and now residing in João Pessoa, Paraíba, the artwork is a visual and conceptual synthesis of these experiences. The choice of referencing São João is not only a tribute to the northeastern tradition but also a bridge between the different regions of Brazil that have shaped my perception.

This artwork, part of the "Panapaná" project — meaning “butterflies” in Tupi Guaraní — undergoes a continuous metamorphosis, occupying three interconnected spaces and exhibition actions. It also aims to create a cultural metamorphosis I faced in the transition between regions, social factors, and landscapes.

Thus, the work not only pays homage to cultural traditions and the native vision of the landscape but also invites the viewer to participate in a poetic experience, establishing new perceptions about nature and culture. This interaction between cultural heritage, geometric shapes, and rich regional nomenclature results in a work that not only represents but also interprets and dialogues with the landscape, enriching it with layers of meaning that go beyond mere visual aesthetics.

As bandeiras de São João são elementos icônicos das festas juninas no Nordeste brasileiro, carregando consigo tradições, cores e simbolismos intrinsecamente ligados à cultura da região. 

Originárias de Portugal, essas bandeiras têm uma história rica que se entrelaça com a religiosidade, a agricultura e a celebração. A origem das bandeiras de São João remonta à Europa, onde a celebração do solstício de verão e a festa de São João Batista coincidiam. Com a expansão da colonização portuguesa para o Brasil, essa tradição foi trazida para cá, adaptando-se aos elementos culturais e climáticos locais. As bandeiras são confeccionadas com tecidos coloridos e decoradas com motivos juninos, como fogueiras, balões, flores e símbolos religiosos. As cores predominantes são o amarelo, o vermelho e o verde, que representam, respectivamente, o milho, o fogo e a folhagem típica dessa época do ano. Essas cores também estão relacionadas à fertilidade da terra e à colheita, uma vez que as festas juninas têm raízes agrícolas, marcando a época da colheita do milho.

As bandeirolas nas festas juninas têm uma relação direta com os santos populares São João, Santo Antônio e São Pedro. Esses santos têm suas festividades celebradas durante o mês de junho, e as bandeirolas surgiram como uma forma de homenageá-los e decorar os espaços onde as festas acontecem.

São João flags are iconic elements of the June festivals in northeastern Brazil, carrying with them traditions, colors, and symbolism intrinsically linked to the region's culture.

Originating from Portugal, these flags have a rich history intertwined with religiosity, agriculture, and celebration. The origin of São João flags dates back to Europe, where the celebration of the summer solstice and the feast of Saint John the Baptist coincided. With the expansion of Portuguese colonization to Brazil, this tradition was brought here, adapting to local cultural and climatic elements. The flags are made of colorful fabrics and decorated with June motifs such as bonfires, balloons, flowers, and religious symbols. The predominant colors are yellow, red, and green, representing respectively corn, fire, and the typical foliage of this time of year. These colors are also related to the fertility of the land and the harvest, as the June festivals have agricultural roots, marking the corn harvest season.

The "Lágrimas do Rio Mar, o Rio Amazonas" project is an homage to these São João flags, utilizing their vibrant colors and symbolism to create a meaningful artistic statement. Just as the São João flags have cultural and historical significance, this installation aims to evoke a connection to the Amazon River while engaging with the playful and imaginative spirit of northeastern Brazil.

O trabalho artístico foi desenvolvido durante a imersão no Espaço Arapuca Arte Residência sob o edital ‘Panapaná - Novembro das Artes 2023'. Foram intensos 10 dias imersivos em meio a natureza construindo obras que fizeram parte da exposição integrante da programação do projeto que tem como temática “natureza e natureza imaginada: interseções entre tradição, arte digital e IA”.

Os artistas foram acompanhados pelos mentores Cris Peres e Serge Huot, ambos artistas visuais, além da curadora e historiadora de arte, Rita do Monte.

The artistic work was developed during the immersion at "Arapuca Art Residency" under the announcement 'Panapaná - November of the Arts 2023'. It was an intense 10 immersive days amidst nature, building these works that were part of the exhibition that is part of the project's programming, which has as its theme “nature and imagined nature: intersections between tradition, digital art and AI”.

The artists were accompanied by mentors Cris Peres and Serge Huot, both visual artists, and by the curator and art historian Rita do Monte.
